Enduring frosty mornings is a love hate relationship.  I hate them for the chilly feeling getting up in the morning but love them for the warming sun that is generally guaranteed after a clear cold night.  After chipping the ice off the chickens’ water butt I was going to take a stroll down the garden to look at the overnight damage in the kitchen garden.  I got waylaid with the camera looking at the new water loving grasses that have sprung up.  Pesky things – I’ll deal with them in the Spring.

The bassets weren’t too keen on the frosty ground for all new and exciting smells it brings.  A little chilly round the ears, nose and undercarriage.  No wonder Mason is pulling one of his silly faces.

Fortnum was just giving one of his indignant stares as if to say – what pose outside now with all this cold white stuff?

So we didn’t linger long.  But long enough to enjoy the morning sun catching the grasses.

The kitchen garden sits in it’s own micro climate and was hardly touched by frost and was basking in glorious morning sun.  Although the temperatures haven’t reached double figures all day it’s been a pleasure to warm up outside.  We finished planting out the rose garden with the final selection of roses.  Also, harvested silver beet, parsnips, swede, carrot, beetroot and celeriac in readiness for dinner tonight and tomorrow.  A trot along the Rimutaka Incline trail tracking the hords of families out on their bikes was only topped by afternoon tea with one of our favourite treats – a Fat Rascal with a mug of steaming tea.

Good to know we have a little in common with our families and friends in the northern hemisphere – some sunshine. All in all a rather pleasant way to spend a Sunday – thawing in the sun.
