I not only remembered to take my camera to work with me today but I also remembered to have the data card and had a fully charged battery. Just the most important things you need if you’re going to practise your photography!
I thought it might be fun to snap the things I passed on my way to work today.
First up, a few boats moored on the harbour. Their bright red colour caught my eye.
Here are some of the old shipyard buildings now converted into pubs, clubs, art galleries and other miscellaneous public amenities.
It’s actually nice to see these quayside buildings, they give a historic perspective to the city that might otherwise be missing. This photo shows the old on the left and the modern on the right.
I’ve walked past this building heaps of times but never noticed the ornate details.
Here’s a closer view.
You’ll have to indulge my nostalgia here.
Look familiar?
It’s amazing how these British icons are fixtures in a New Zealand City. The next picture is much more in keeping with the kiwi artistic character. A striking street sculpture.
Here’s some wonderful art deco glasswork in the former Ministry of Defence Building.
I love the station building. It has gravitas that is sometimes missing in modern architecture.
This is architecture that Wellington could do without. Also, see this staircase. I know it well. It takes me up 13 floors to where one of my coaching clients works. The lifts in this building are notoriously out of order on a regular basis. I think that they sense my need for more exercise and switch themselves off so I can take the stairs!
Here’s the final stretch back to the carpark. I admit it’s not the prettiest part of town and it’s a five minute walk beyond the station. It is however cheap and parking is plentiful.
Although I’ve only just read this sign. I wonder if it means I can’t bring my latte with me to the car for my journey home?
Once again I’m struck by how much more you notice you take of your day to day surroundings when you have a camera locked to your face. It took me 10 minutes longer to get where I needed to but it was the most fun I’ve had walking to work in a while!
Were those gargoyles sheep ? It would make sense. I do the same type of thing looking for interesting things to share on the blog but I’m much lazier as I do that from the comfort of my car, sometimes not even getting out to take the photos. Usually it’s a matter of finding a safe gateway to park in. My last visit to Bristol reminded me why I really don’t like cities though the area around the train station and the walk into the centre was through some very grotty ex industrial buildings alongside major roadways. If I ever get my dental appointment I’ll try and find some nicer points but it is harder when you’re on foot. Here every journey to work is through the beautiful hills with views down to the sea. No wonder I haven’t returned once to London in 15 years.
I’ve only been away for a minute and look at all these posts! Such wonderful photos and to see things I would normally miss. I still havent seen the red phonebox – where is that!? It is on Post Office Square? Well done on a lovely post, thank you for sharing it with us xx
