Across America people are celebrating Thanksgiving. In two of the offices I visited today for work the frenzy had reached New Zealand with pumpkin pie on offer and conversations about what people were thankful for.
It’s interesting to stop and think about what your reasons for being thankful are. The first time I was asked this today I was taken slightly by surprise and muttered something about that fact I had rain this week to boost my vegetable growing.
It’s fair to say that this was not seen as a reason to be thankful with people bemoaning the wet and windy weather in Wellington. But hey, I’m a girl on a mission so couldn’t help myself.
I know two bassets who aren’t thankful at all but should be. They have no idea that bassets, and dogs generally, don’t have (a) a pampered existence (b) acres of land in which to romp (c) some of the most stunning countryside in which to walk every day, and (d) the biggest lawn you’d ever want just down the road.
A place that has so many smells you could spend a week sniffing and you wouldn’t find them all.
A place where you can run and run and run.
And hoon with your brother.
No, these are bassets that don’t know when they are well off.
I however, do know when I am well off. I’m thankful for health and happiness. And winning $65 on the lotto in the last two weeks. I’m thankful for living in a beautiful place and thankful that family and friends don’t begrudge the fact that we ran away to realise our dream.
I’m thankful that everyday I can be inspired by what’s around me and enjoy the simple things in life. I’m thankful that I have had the chance to change my life and be a Domestic Executive.
What are you thankful for on this Thanksgiving Day?
I’m intrigued, is that a local public space, or somebody’s very large garden ? Which ever, it’s a lot of grass if you had to cut it. Thank you for the Thanksgiving theme, I shall probably borrow it for today’s post.
ps Have you seen Pioneerwoman’s sweet video of her basset being not terribly energetic ?
Hi Ruta, it’s a public park. Tunnel Gully. We can see it from our kitchen window down the valley and as well as bush walks it has this massive area of grass. Great for picnics as well as basset hooning!
I’m joining you on being thankful for the rain! It has saved me standing outside for a loooong time moving the sprinkler around the garden (not that I mind too much, as I find it quite therapeutic!).
At this point in time my thoughts are with those in India and the families who have lost loved ones or are still in a hostage situation.

Thanksgiving. For many years I have thought ‘pah, another American thing’, yet as the years roll on I realise how lucky they are to have this celebration. A day where you HAVE TO find something to be thankful for, a glimmer of hope in some people who are having a hard time. Simple, magical.
My things to be thankful for this week are: supportive friends, a lust for life, and alcohol!! xx
Marrisa – I love you! Your humour and honesty, as always, put a warm smile on my face. I also used to think ‘ pah’ to Thanksgiving – but I have to say – of all the various celebrations the Thanksgiving one is perhaps, in this day and age, more worthy than many others of a high place on the calendar.
Thanks to Domestic Executive for getting us all thinking!
