Rain and wind was not in our plan for today.  It’s a bitter blow for a Sunday when we planned to be out for a long basset walk and spending time ticking off the list of outdoor chores.  It just wasn’t to be today and we weren’t very happy about that.  I had to resort to clearing the ironing pile and that is never a good thing as far as I am concerned.

Fortnum wasn’t too pleased either as he lazed around blowing out his cheeks in protest. There is nothing worse than a basset who is sulking.

Fortnum's wet Sunday

A little like me Fortnum is happiest when he can be outdoors in the sunshine.  In his case lying on the veranda warming his belly or just parading around the fence line like a guard on patrol.  You can never be too careful who might be out there.  We had to make the most of being indoors though. I’d like to say that Fortnum an alternative list of indoor activities but in truth he doesn’t.  No this is pretty much it.

Mason loves the fact it rains as it’s a perfect excuse for him to stay indoors.  He is such an indoor dog and does all he can to weasel his way back in when he’s been put out.  He will run from door to door until he finds one open or simply sit by the side door on the veranda and stare up longingly.  I swear I sometimes hear a knock on the door but when I go there is no-one there but my little basset.

Little basset

These pictures of Mason were taken this evening (sorry about the artificial light glow).  He refused to sit still earlier in the day when I had the camera out!  You can see that bassets are genetically programmed to make themselves comfortable on a carpet.  Maximum stretch on big soft floor. They will only switch this pose when they start to get belly sores for lying there too long.  Then they’ll just flip over – comfort is important in a bassets life.

All in all this Sunday was a washout.  It wasn’t helped that both MT and I were both tired so doing anything seemed like a huge effort. We didn’t quite lie on the floor but we did take it easy.  I felt frustrated about the things I wanted to do outdoors but seeing the rain coming up the valley soon made me get over that.  Being tired and wet is just one step too far!
