This coming week the grounds work people are returning to finish the drive and spread the mountain of topsoil along the drive and in the top paddock. I figured it was time we harvested the thistles that have been growing beautifully all summer on our soil mound.

I’ve heard all the stories about thistles – one year seeded and seven years regrowth. I am resigned to the fact that I’m going to be harvesting thistles for years to come. Nevertheless, in an effort to reduce the amount of seeds spread around in the soil and buried in newly turned soil we harvest the mound today.

What I thought was a job that would take an hour or so, turned in to much longer. Let’s just say we needed radox in the bath tonight to ease our aching legs and arms. Here’s some photoblogging to show our efforts.

Thistle field on one side of the earth mound – multiple this by six and you’ll get an idea of the size of the harvest

Same side, satisfyingly harvested (well almost!)

Any excuse to be a pyromaniac!

So where were the basset boys you might wonder whilst we were hard at work. Let’s just say they weren’t bounding up the hill to help!
