Around 5 years ago I started to lose my super human powers of memory. I previously had a vast recall which was often the source of much irritation to colleagues and my dearly beloved.
As time as gone on my ability to remember things has diminished at an alarming rate. These are not passing “senior” moments but continued behaviour which has been frustrating, worrying and one of the most stress inducing things.
It ranges from not remembering what it was I went to the fridge to fetch, forgetting to buy things when I’m in town or leaving food cooking long after it’s required cooking time. I have been known to turn up for appointments only to realise I’m a day early!
As well as walking around with a pen/pencil and notepad to write things down, I’ve just installed the biggest memory board in the newly refurbished laundry to help me to remember the chores.
It was pretty easy to do. Just masking tape, some blackboard paint and a spirit level to mark it out. I used a roller to paint, quicker than a brush.
I used three coats of the special blackboard paint.
And ended up with this. My very own place to write down things in big letters and lots of colours if I want.
I am sure that it will be the source of great delight to my husband too who will see at as a personal challenge to create his very own list of things for me to do. A place for witty sayings or play other humorous tricks on.
I will at least be able to keep my domestic chores in one place. We’ll see whether I manage to cross anything off the list more quickly now that the list is staring me in the face as I go to and fro the laundry area several times a day.
All I need now is to add to the board – take memory pills – my daily dose of Ginkgo which is supposed to improve attention and memory although I think has mixed reviews. I’ll give anything a whirl for while to see if there is any benefit.
If anyone has a similar problem and found a neat way to keep your memory in check – please leave me a comment – keen to know what else I could try!

Absolutely awesome!! You are just brilliant! Thats such a good idea, and I bet it fits in just nice in your gorgeous kitchen. You must remember to take photos and let us know if anything funny is written!! xx
Congratulations you have now joined the club
Its called getting older
I’ve never been that good at remembering things. At work I’m helped immensly by my 2 classroom assistants,( 1 works with a little girl with Down’s syndrome), and they always remind me of the things I’ve forgotten. Mind you we have to multi-task big style so it’s not surprising that all of us at work are always forgetting things. Some of my kids are pretty much on the ball and they remind me of the next bit of our routine often before I’ve had a chance to forget. We have visual timetables, for the children, and I have a weekly and daily timetable written out for all of us to refer to though I still mix things up. I have a white board on the kitchen wall by the front door to make all my lists and put reminders – especially things I need to take to work in the morning. (I used to love the really big whiteboards we had in school . It’s interactive whiteboards now.) I make lists but often the shopping list gets left at home. I can remember when I was a teenager going upstairs for something and forgetting what it was. I think that as we get older we just become more conscious of poor memory. I think apart from learning special memory tricks its mostly a I matter of use it or lose it. Hah- I’ve just remembered I should have turned the tv on 10 mins ago for ER.
Looks fabulous! I normally carry around a note-book in my bag. I don’t like electronic organizers – much prefer to open a note-book and turn the pages – it’s nice to use pen and paper for a change!
