Despite the continued misery of our lone duck, I was delighted to see that our ducks who live in Maymourn on the route to the station are still alive and doing well. Here’s a picture of mum with two of the ducklings. There are other ducklings which I couldn’t capture on camera but look as cute and fluffy as these.
Seeing these ducks thriving in their village location made me really pleased. They do after all live on by a road with the dangers of maniacs in their utes hooning around in a hurry. Given the number of pukekos that don’t survive the roads it’s I pleased to be seeing these ducks stepping out.
These ducks don’t hang about you know. This photo is them moving not me! But when you’re heading off to the local puddle for a splash around there is no sense in dawdling, you just need to step it out.
Thinking about it, you don’t see squished ducks on the road, rabbits yes and at the moment lots of squirrels and pheasants all over the Link Road becuase the hooray henries need something to kill, but not ducks. Perhaps they have better road sense. Are you going to keep ducks on your place? Indian Runners would be my choice just because they are so comical.
You’re right Ruta, I don’t think you do see ducks as road kill. They are definitely faster moving than pukekos which are notoriously stupid birds. They even look ridiculous but in the theme of comically looking animals Martin wasn’t to back a few and bring them home to live with us. I’d love to keep ducks and this will be part of the future menagerie when we’ve dug out a suitable place for them to swim! JTx
Oh no, I hate to ruin your illusion of not seeing dead ducks on the road….my post on that to follow soon! x
