Switching off auto on your camera and going manual is like taking the stabilisers off your bike when you’ve only just learnt to ride.  Although I’ve flown solo with my camera for a while the one part that I’ve never really cracked is the using the shutter speed to lead the photographic settings.  This is because it requires me to count more times than I have fingers and toes.  And even if I add basset paws and claws into the equation I still fail to compute the right setting.

My saving grace has been the book I got for Christmas that explains how to take photographs using all the camera settings.  Today I wanted to try out using the shutter speed creatively.  This is the result that MT and I chose for the Daily Snap.  I like the way the river almost looks painted on.  On the flip side I dialed the shutter speed to a faster level and took some improved shots of the bassets at play.

More practice needed but for once I feel I might be on the way to stepping up the photography to a new level from things that are standing still!
