A weekend miscellany

It’s been a mishmash this weekend.  Lots of chores to tick off the list in preparation of my in-laws arriving next week.  It was as if my blogging mind was affected as I kept noticing random things rather there being a “theme” as such to blog about. In case you are wondering this is the [...]

An earie reminder of life

The Air New Zealand plane crash in the Mediterranean is dominating headlines here today.  There are lots of comparisons with a crash on the same date in 1979.  It’s a tragic irony. Life hangs by just a thread and things like this make you realise how thin that thread is. You can read coverage here.

It’s that time of year when the northern hemisphere is getting into the Christmas mood.  The retail sector goes into overdrive and every where you go there are iconic images of snow, father christmas and the like. Here in New Zealand people are just making that last push effort to get to Christmas as this [...]

What’s Your Friday Feeling?

These clouds caught my eye on the basset walk today.  They looked suspended, almost unreal, hanging over the Hutt Valley.  They look painted with amazing perspective.  It was indeed a beautiful day today. Sunny, warm (not too hot) and very spring like.  It’s amazing walking out in the country at the moment.  Everything is verdant [...]

Reasons to be thankful!

Across America people are celebrating Thanksgiving.  In two of the offices I visited today for work the frenzy had reached New Zealand with pumpkin pie on offer and conversations about what people were thankful for. It’s interesting to stop and think about what your reasons for being thankful are.  The first time I was asked [...]

Another new addition in the garden

A new addition in the garden.  This cute little white flower on the Philadelphus Lemoinei.  It’s a relief to see it coming into flower as this particular plant has had a tough life since it arrived having been a preferred seat for a basset’s bottom on many occasion. It was only when I put an [...]

Water – the fuel for food!

This is a very happy vegetable patch.  It’s been thirsty for days although it’s been watered regularly.  It’s been thirsting for real water straight from the sky.  The clouds have happily obliged today which to be honest has been a relief all round. The dry spell and sunshine is wonderful but it is tough on [...]

Water – now, that’s better

It was hotter and dryer yesterday than it was supposed to be.  The bassets had a particularly tiring walk as a result.  The first priority when we were back was to rehydrate us all.  You can see in this picture that Mason was wasting no time in making himself more refreshed. Then it was time [...]

You can’t beat a good sniff

Today it was supposed to rain.  Bucket down.  Wild winds and raindrops.  I had planned my entire to do list around the rain that was forecast for today. Can you believe it was 25 degrees and one of the hottest days of the year. Not a drop of water in sight.  And, boy do my [...]

It’s nice being neighbourly

I’ve taken up the mantle of the nosey neighbour from our neighbour Jim.  Whilst we were building our house Jim didn’t miss a trick watching what was happening and keeping an eye on the builders.  He knows more about how our house was built that I do. OK, that’s probably not true but you get [...]
