Thanks for this background. I had never noticed the inscriptions before and was tickled by the expression. I’m going to have to check out the Lower Hutt one now!

It has that earlyish-20th-Century solidarity / improvement of the common citizen-thru-education tone (the Lower Hutt library has a similar nice heroic socialist sort of ethos in its building) and, as part of that, inscribed the sorts of literature that could be found inside, outside!
