One of our dogs (in London) would 'play' with hedgehogs , terminally - if I didn't get them off him. Any survivors would be re-homed by my postman in return for slug munching duties. They're great for the veg plot but only if you don't use slug pellets/liquids which will cause them to die in agony. I haven't seen any in my garden which is a shame as we have LOTS of slugs. I'll just have to make do with the toads who aren't keeping up with the supply.

Apparently if you want to encourage them they love catfood and it is good for them (unlike bread and milk). And also apparently the kindest thing you can do is dust them with flea powder - they tend to be infested because the poor things can't scratch themselves!

Adorable photographs! We have a couple that visit our garden every year. They scuttle past the lounge window about the same time every evening and are pretty fast. They nibble at any left-over cat-food.

Like you, I wish one would transform into Mrs Tiggy Winkle and magically do my laundry :)

I've only seen 1.5 live hedgehogs since emigrating to NZ 3 years ago. (the .5 was scuttling into a bush, so I just saw his bum). The rest have been flattened on the roads. There are no hedgehogs where I come from (South Africa) so they still very much have the air of cuteness for me ... your Beatrix Potter and Enid Blyton.
