In reply to <a href="https://www.domestic-executive.com/domestic-executive-snapshots/how-bassets-can-be-high-maintenance/comment-page-1/#comment-2425">Janis</a>.

I have just posted first time and under your comment. With your experience with your three different dog breeds, you might be able to answer a question for me. I have an adult daughter, married, who parents four dogs; two labradoodles, one golden retriever, one other mix breed. She tried to have the basset over for a play date that was a disaster.

She was annoyed with the Basset, Hopper. I countered that that the Basset seems to be
always thinking on many different levels. Is that what you mean by a complex personality.
Her dogs seem much more laid back. This was the first time Hopper met a formed pack
and he seemed overwhelmed.

What are some of the traits of Bruno that would prompt you to choose a Basset over your very fine other dogs.

I googled and found this wonderful blog. I am in my 80’s and have taken on a family Basset
that was about to be given away to some stranger. In our family no such thing is allowed.
What is becoming of the younger generation!

So in truth this basset,Hopper, had crept into my heart when he was a puppy. He had the most magnetic pull on me I had ever experienced from a dog. In fact, I once went into retirement from any animals. I even had an email called “Nomorepets, etc.

That’s why this blog when it named that “creeping into the heart trait” , I had to subscribe to it. I hope the blog is still active.

I need any info about how to stop nuisance barking that anyone can send me. The worse part is that I live in a condo with all of its house rules. I know. Who would do a thing like that? Actually, we are moving to a house in a small town. That’s how much I love this dog.
But he still needs to be trained out of this bad habit. I would appreciate any tips you have .

I found you by googling "Thessalian bulls".

I officially say, I love you, I love your blog, and most of all, I love your bassets!

We've three dogs: golden retriever (7 years); chocolate lab (5 years); and our baby, Bruno the basset (3 years). We adore all our dogs, but David & I have decided that when our retrievers return to the Elysian fields, bassets will reign.

Bruno is so funny, and indeed, a complex personality. And, he suffers so. (Sarcasm) :)

I do hopeFortnum's eye heals quickly, poor fella.
I remember when I first got Abigail she got bit by something that she had an allergic reaction to. The "reaction" was centered around her face. Anyway, the funny thing was her bodies reaction, her whole face swelled up like a balloon, even her precios ears which became about a 1/2 inch thick with fluid and weighed a ton!! It was quite pathetic and yet so comical at the same time. It took a bout a week for the sweeling to go down.

Bassets have best personalities, quirky and kind, yet VERY strong willed and they possess the biggest hearts of any breed!!

I agree that bassets have huge personalities. When people meet my basset they mistakenly think that he just sits there. Ha! Almost always when there is mischief or mayhem about, the basset is behind it. And then when I get irritated, he flops down in my lap for an ear rub, knowing that I can't be mad when he cuddles. They really are the perfect package when it comes to dogs.
