Oh, I know exactly what you mean about the pressure to both make beautiful images and also take in a place for your own memory. I have a Canon Elph in my handbag at all times and if I know it's important to me to really experience a place or an event, I leave the Nikon dSLR at home.

I know what you mean about the continual stopping to look for good shots. Peter does get a bit fed up so I tend to rush whereas if I'm on my own I can wait for the light or move around looking for the right angle. On the other hand I can't bear to leave the house without my camera ..... just in case. I bought my current handbag so that is is big enough to fit the camera and I have lengthened the camera strap so that when I'm out walking it sits slung behind me out of the way but ready to grab if a good shot presents itself. I usually snap off a quick 'fixing shot' to record the overall setting before looking for angles and light. Even so I often return home and think 'Why didn't I take that picture?' Still for me photography is about capturing my memories as well as looking for beauty.
