My basset was “aloof” also and preferred much “me time”!! Of course when she felt that it was time to be cuddled she let me know by making basset noises (grunts and grumbles) until I gave in, stopped what I was doing and proceded to commence the rubbing of the belly followed by proper pets and lovings. She was more like a cat than a dog I guess.
