I never tire of the view down the valley to tunnel gully.  In truth I spend quite a lot of time looking at this.  Either through the kitchen window.  Or the bedroom window.  Or best of all on a balmy summer evening from the veranda with a glass of New Zealand Sav’ in my hand.

Pondering how this view could be improved, if at all, I struck upon a way this could be done.

See that grass blowing in the breeze.  Now if that wasn’t there to obscure the view at a low level we’d see even more.  So that’s it, had to be done.  We need to create an infinity lawn to give that uninterrupted view.  You know what I mean?  Just like an infinity swimming pool but, well, with a lawn!

So how do you get yourself an inifinity lawn you may well be asking yourself.  Or perhaps you just think I’ve had one too many glasses of wine.  Here’s the secret.  You need one of these.

Yes, a man with a strimmer.  But not any old strimmer.  One that works.  That doesn’t break down and that doesn’t have it’s parts flinging off in all directions causing harm to wildlife and an passing bassets.  Yes you need a new strimmer.  A late Christmas present to ourselves to set us off on a positive note for 2009.

Oh, and if you look closely in this picture.  It’s quite handy to have a mother-in-law around too.  To hang out the washing whilst we’re toiling on the land.

The other benefit of a strimmer is that you can get the long grass away from your vegetable patch.  So it’s not just the aesthetics of an infinity lawn here.  Practical application too.

I digress. The point here is that a strimmer is an essential tool for clearing the long grass and weeds.  That is of course unless you can get your hands on one of these.

Or one of these.

Put the two together and you have this.

Don’t you just hate it when you have to keep up with your neighbours.  Look at this baby slicing through the grass.

It’s just not fair.

If I’d married a farmer instead of an electrical engineer I could watch tractors in the field all the time.  And I’d probably be able to get them to create an infinity lawn for me.

But back in the real world we have to make do with our small strimmer and tractor.  Not exactly farming impliments but they do the job.  No doubt about it though.  You can achieve this in just a few swishes of the real tractor.

The key difference between us and our neighbours is that when I turn around this is what I see.

And it’s not a bad view at all.  It’s just that having an infinity lawn would make all the difference!

So back to the point of this post.

This is what you get when you create an inifinity lawn.

It may only be a small inifinity lawn at the moment but when you unearth the paving steps too you can start to see some structure and design that was intended with the landscaping.

OK, I know I need more of a lawn.  But let’s just take this one step at a time.  After all, it takes a lot of effort to see infinity and beyond.

Lots of thistles and grass to be cleared.

This is what it looks like from the other angle.

Can’t remember what it looked like before?  Don’t worry.  Here’s the before picture.

Shocking I know.  Just think how good it felt when we finished grafting last night.

Underneath all that was a danger I wasn’t aware of.  It does explain why one of the trees hasn’t grown.  Those pesky rabbits have made themselves at home.

There is nothing for it.  I simply must train the bassets to rabbit hunt.

But that’s going to have to wait for another day.  I’ve got an infinity lawn to build.  Wish me luck!
