Winter has brought a double blow to the bassets. Not only is it freezing cold but they’ve caught a nasty virus infection that’s laid them up at home. They are getting more fed up by the day. The big storm warning didn’t bring quite the snow we expected but it was still pretty unpleasant.
An icy wind complete with sleet, hail, snow and lots of rain kept sweeping up the valley in waves. We were all huddled around the fire for warmth. It was very cosy. The perfect winter pose.
It’s always hard to capture the weather but I think this picture about sums it up.
For all the bruhaha we still didn’t get much of a covering of snow. It was mainly hail that settled on the ground. We live in hope that the bassets might yet experience a proper snow storm. After all the last one didn’t live up to much either.
We are making the most of the fire this year. It’s a regular chore for me to light the fire each day – not just because it helps with heating the house but it becomes the primary source of water heating since the solar isn’t in much of position to generate it’s usual tank of hot water. The bassets have claimed the best spot in front of the fire.
Yes there is definitely not a look in for anyone else.
This special position is only by virtue of the fact that they are poorly dogs. Nothing drastic but nevertheless not great. They’ve got tracheobroncitis which is higly contagious but treatable with antibiotics and rest. They have been vaccinated against it but it seems like the flu jab it’s not 100% effective. It’s probable that they picked it up at day care from one of the other dogs. Just like when kids go to school and catch everything that’s going. These are bassets that live a relatively secluded life and proves my point that they need to get out more.
Fortnum, our explorer basset, is feeling very down about not being able to go for his daily hike.
Mason thinks it’s wonderful as he has the perfect excuse to stay indoors, keep his paws dry and ready his encyclopedia Britannica. Yes our brainy basset just loves to stay indoors.
He also loves to terrorise his brother and be top dog. Poor Fortnum, all he wants is a bit of peace and quiet!
If you are of a sensitive nature you might want to look away now.
Today is the official start of winter. It’s also a public holiday – celebrating the Queen’s Birthday. God bless HRH!
Brrrrr, sure has been cold! Love your log burner. We used to have one in our Brooklyn townhouse and it added so much romance to winter. We loved curling round it with a game or book.
Do hope Fortnum and Mason get well soon – oh that last photo… I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry in sympathy!
Poor old doggies. At least they’ve got a nice warm place to sit . It looks as if we’re having the lovely weather for a change, 27 C predicted for today, cooler up here in the hills with a little breeze. It might even last another whole day ! but then we could be back to rotten weather. 2 years ago it rained every day for 6 weeks over the summer.
Your bassets look extra droopy when they are sick. I love your posts about them; I always look forward to the next installment! I have a basset too and I appreciate the quirks of the breed. Keep the fabulous pics coming!
the picture of Mason standing over Fortnum is fantastic and hilarious!!!
I also love the way that they not only lay in front of the fire but both of them lay with their bellies facing toward it to keep their tummies warm!!
