The New Zealand Met Service are advising people to wear at least 4 layers of clothing tonight to protect themselves from the storms facing Wellington with windchill factors that make an 8 degrees temperature feel more like 2 degrees.
I know but I can’t help it, I’m British. My obsession about the weather has not deserted me just because I deserted my homeland!
We’ve gone from drought to rain of monsoon proportions. The Hutt Valley has had more than it’s average rainfall for the year so far. Although I’m keen for a bit of water (you know the tank and the garden) but I’m truly fed up with wet paws, crazy chickens and wild dogs who are missing out on their outdoor fun.
We’ve had over 150mm of water this month. Let me tell you that’s a heck of a lot. I’ve check the short weather forecast and it looks like more still to come. If anyone has access to the tap upstairs can you give it a twist and turn it off. I’ve had enough and I want to enjoy the winter beach next week without this sort of view.
Just up the coast here’s what they’ve been enduring.
The view at MTs favourite store in town.
And now here’s the science bit. Just in case you don’t believe me!
I hadn’t realy thought about how your weather would be reversed there. You suggested wearing four layers and I thought it was because of too much sun… or something funny.
Rain is my favorite weather, but I will be the first to admit that too much is too much. I hope it calms down for you.

The whole seasons/weather/calendar thing is the one bit of moving to the southern hemisphere I haven’t really quite come to terms with. Heck, July is supposed to be high summer not mid winter.
It’s a darn long haul from Queens Birthday in June to Labour Day in October which in my book is winter. The positive thing is though that you can winter sun in the northern hemisphere and lots of kiwis do. They flock to Europe and other places to get their travel fix.
As for me at least we have seasons. Although I long for a year round pacific island climate like Fiji but suspect after a while I’d miss the freezing temperatures, southerly storms and bibilical proportion rains.
Where New Zealand is concerned the thing to keep in mind is it’s closest to the south pole and therefore a cold place with a hot sun. As soon as the sun goes the arctic conditions can kick in!
Hope the sun is shining wherever you are.

Thank you for your response… The sun in shining, I was going to complain about it, I’m not a creature built for the heat. I spent six years in Arizona where it was hot all the time, I missed seasons terribly. Though I’m more than ready to take that Fiji test, even if I don’t like it, it’s worth a shot.
