Wandering along the Hutt River today I was struck by how I missed the usual autumn colour this year. Most of our trees or their leaves were blown away in the gale winds of a few weeks ago and I haven’t made the pilgrimage to the local park where there is usually a fantastic display of autumn colour.  Instead we’re left with the constant backdrop of green from the New Zealand bush. For a moment I felt really sad and homesick for a true winter scape.
This weekend I shall once again be doing battle with the bush at home. Harvesting gorse and scrub to feed to my new wood chipper – it will make perfect composting and mulching material. Gardeners delight!
