Fortnum is always a wonderful photographic model.  I wanted to practise locking the focus on my camera and he was happy to oblige.  The light was far from perfect as the sun was starting to set behind the hill but nevertheless I’m pleased with how things turned out.

I should point out that Fortnum loves to chew.  Sticks, toys, bones are his favourite now he’s grown out of chewing the walls.

I was able to capture these shots from being below Fortnum who was lying on the infinity lawn.  I should apologise now for the background which is a bit unsightly but that’s what happens when you have the builders in.

I just love the way his tail curls up at the end.

It’s hard to get the dog in focus and not the background.

Chewing is a serious business

This is a happy basset, tail curled up and chomping on his stick.  The paws come in handy too!

Paws are handy things

He did decide to show off his stick a bit which has comic potential at least.

Chew chewI moved around to see if I could get close up on his face but he decided to be shy and hide it in his stick.

Chow down

Just look at those eyes.  He’s not happy, he’s watching something.

Doh!

Can’t blame him.  Here is someone watching to jump in and steal his stick.

Mason in waiting

But Fortnum is a laid back basset who will hang on to his stick.  Even if he guards it like a sentry.

On guard

But it’s time to move on and take ones stick with you.  I love the way he still keeps the paw on the stick to stop people/other bassets taking it off you.  His wrinkles are as pudgy in this picture as they are in real life.

On the move

Getting these action shots wasn’t easy as he decided to move and sit in the shade.  Less than perfect for photography!

Basset and stick on the move

Time to lie again.  This picture only works as part of this story. I’d otherwise delete it for being too dark.

Lying down

And for his finale he gives me a classic Fortnum stare!

Finished now?

One of my inspirations for my dog photography is this professional dog photographer who does a wonderful job.  She is hugely proficient in photoshop and has high end camera gear.  I can aspire to these standards one day but in the meantime it’s just Fortnum, his stick and me at the end of an autumn day!

The next step for me is to find someone else who has an accommodating dog that will let me snap away at them.
