As if the trumpeting of Spring’s official arrival today (1 September) wasn’t enough the garden is making its own declaration of intent.  These Asparagus spears are from plants I grew from seed three years ago.  This year we should be able to harvest for eating but I’m feeling very nervous about doing that.  Perhaps I’ll leave them for another year to grow stronger. Or maybe I won’t.  Oh decisions, decisions.

All of a sudden there is a flurry of decisions to make.  Should I eat the purple sprouting broccoli first or the regular kind? Since the purple sprouting kind is the first I’ve grown it seems only right and proper that it should have the honour. Or may be we should lash out and eat both.  After all a touch more broccoli isn’t going to do much harm.  Unlike eating too much pumpkin cake would.

Whichever way we decide to go we’re going to have to make room for our first cauliflower of the season too.

This is our third Spring season in the kitchen garden and it feels just as exciting as the first. The greenhouse is loaded up with seeds in trays which I hope will have germinated and be ready for transplanting by the time I get back from my trip to the UK.  We’ve got spuds chitting in the barn and more seeds to be sown direct this weekend when we’ve topped up the beds with with compost. Also, a trip to the garden centre is in order to get some more seed trays for the tomatoes and companion plants to be planted up this weekend.

All of a sudden it’s a flurry of activity.  But that’s Spring all over.  Everything is bursting with energy and good intentions. I feel tired just thinking about it!
