What do you see when the sun sets?

The hardest thing about living in New Zealand is saying goodbye to visitors when they leave.  My in-laws have been, stayed and now gone.  The house is earily quiet.  Just MT, I and the bassets at home. As always when family come it passes in a flash even though it’s been many weeks.  We’ve packed [...]

George’s banished to his bach

It’s a bitter ending for George’s antics.  Drastic action had to be taken.  Yes, our magnificent rooster has simply gone to far. Chicken keeping visitors marvel at George’s rooster prowess.  But they haven’t been on the end of his beak  when he launches a rooster rage attack.  Neither are they one of the hens who [...]

Showing off bassets

We’re enjoying Wellington Day today.  This means a day off for MT and the annual basset show.  Last year was a daunting experience to be taking Fortnum and Mason to a place with so many other people and bassets but they behaved beautifully despite it being one of the hottest days of the year.

A day for birthday treats

It was a day for treats – birthday treats in honour of my mother-in-law.  Weather wise is wasn’t great but that didn’t stop our celebrations.  So where do you go for birthday treats round here? The wine region of course!

The wonders of thistles!

dsc_0986_edited-1

Having done battle with thistles for weeks and weeks and weeks it gave me an enormous amount of pleasure to spend an hour in the garden to photograph a few still remaining on the other 4 acres of land.  There have been times when I have hated these pesky things but when you get close [...]

We’re done and it’s never to be repeated!

You know that feeling when you’ve completed a job.  A hard job.  A job that’s been a long and hard slog.  Something that’s used up lots of energy, brainpower and resources.  A job that you’d wished you never started but carried on till the bitter end. That’s the feeling I had today wheeling my barrow [...]

Hedgerow festivities

dsc_0922_edited-1

In the UK our last house had a name.  It was called Holly House on account of the enormous holly trees in the garden.  It was wonderful at this time of year lots of red juicy berries giving the place a real festive feel. Holly is not something that you see a great deal of [...]

Clean bill of health for bassets

A year ago I took my bundles of fluff to see the vet and get their shots.  One year on it was time for their health check and booster shots.  Taking the bassets to the vet is always fun.  There are so many things in their reception area to smell that it almost drives Fortnum [...]

You can’t hurry an artist at work!

I’m still loving my Christmas presents.  All of them but in particular my new camera.  Especially now I have the new zoom lens and can get close up and personal on lots of stuff.  My mother-in-law has gone camera shy and Fortnum is getting bored with it all. Here his is in a protest lie [...]

The neighbours are still building

It seems that progress on our neighbours house has slowed right down.  There have been builders there since just after Christmas but somehow progress has seemed much slower. That’s one of the mysteries of the building trade.  People on site but not much happening.  Or so it seems.
